Centre Proposes Unified Broadcasting Rules for TV and Radio Services
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting released the draft Telecommunications (Television, Radio and Associated Services) Rules, 2026 on 12 June 2026 under the provisions of the Telecommunications Act, 2023, proposing a unified regulatory framework for television and radio broadcasting services across India. The draft aims to simplify existing regulations, improve ease of doing business, and strengthen public-interest broadcasting. Under the proposed rules, television channels must broadcast at least 30 minutes of public-interest content daily between 6 AM and 11 PM, while private FM radio stations must air one hour of programming focused on themes of national importance and social relevance. Key subjects include education, agriculture, health, science and technology, women’s welfare, environmental protection, cultural heritage, and national integration. The framework replaces multiple existing guidelines, including provisions derived from the colonial-era Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, with a modern regulatory structure. While private FM stations will have expanded public-service obligations, they will continue to be prohibited from independently broadcasting news and may only air unaltered bulletins from Akashvani along with approved information such as weather, traffic, sports updates, examination announcements, and public notices. Stakeholders can submit comments on the draft rules until 27 July 2026.
India Becomes World’s 3rd Largest Domestic Aviation Market: Key Facts
India achieved a major milestone in the aviation sector by becoming the world’s third-largest domestic aviation market in April 2024, with airline capacity reaching 15.6 million seats, according to data from OAG. Surpassing Brazil and Indonesia, India now trails only the United States and China in domestic aviation capacity. This remarkable growth has been driven by rising air travel demand, expanding airport infrastructure, increasing disposable incomes, greater tourism and business travel, and government initiatives to improve regional connectivity. India’s domestic airline capacity grew at an average annual rate of 6.9% between 2014 and 2024, while operational airports increased from 74 in 2014 to 164 in 2025. Low-cost carriers accounted for 78.4% of domestic capacity, with IndiGo playing a key role by expanding its market share from 32% in 2014 to 62% in 2024. The achievement strengthens India’s position as a global aviation hub, boosts tourism and trade, creates employment opportunities, enhances regional connectivity, and supports the country’s broader economic growth and infrastructure development goals.

CPI Inflation Edges Up to 3.93% in May; Tomato Prices Drive Food Inflation
India’s retail inflation, measured by the Consumer Price Index, rose to 3.93% in May 2026 from 3.48% in April 2026, according to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. The increase was primarily driven by higher food prices, with food inflation rising from 4.20% to 4.78%, particularly due to sharp increases in the prices of tomatoes and ginger. Tomato inflation surged to 48.43%, while ginger inflation reached 32.49%. Rising fuel prices also pushed up transportation costs, contributing to overall inflation. Rural inflation stood at 4.25%, higher than urban inflation at 3.53%, reflecting greater dependence on food consumption and supply-chain challenges in rural areas. Among states, Telangana recorded the highest inflation at 6.15%, followed by Tamil Nadu at 5.11%, while Delhi reported one of the lowest rates at 2.50%. Despite the increase, inflation remains within the tolerance range of the Reserve Bank of India, though concerns persist over rising food and transportation costs.
