To regulate the rapidly growing the online gaming sector India has introduced new rules to focusing on the user safety and the responsible gaming. These are to e notified on the ay 1st, 2026 under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. It is also part of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025 (PROGA) and will create the safer, transparent and accountable gaming system.
Formation of Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI)
The major feature of the new rules is the to creation of the Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI).
Structure of OGAI
It will be headed by a senior official (Additional Secretary level)
Includes representatives from,
- Ministry of Home Affairs
- Ministry of Information & Broadcasting
- Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports
- Department of Financial Services
- Department of Legal Affairs
This authority will act as the central body for the monitoring, compliance and the grievance will handling in the online gaming sector.
Focus on User Safety and Responsible Gaming
The new rules put up the strong emphasis on to protect the users from different types of risks.
Mandatory Safety Features
The Gaming companies must have to implement the safeguards against,
- The Financial risks like excessive spending
- Also to stop psychological harm.
- Also the security and privacy threats
- Consumption of the inappropriate or harmful content
The rules also require the systems which promote the responsible gaming behaviour, transparency in gameplay and transactions and the informed user choice
No Mandatory Pre-Registration for All Games
One of the key features in the rules is the removal of the mandatory pre-registration for all online games.
However this comes with the conditions like the,
- Games should not harm the users or children.
- They must not have to involve risky or harmful activities.
- Only the certain categories of the games will require registration.
Mandatory Registration for E-Sports and Certain Platforms
The general games may not need the mandatory registration and the e-sports platforms must be registered with OGAI.
Registration will depend on factors like,
- The scale of users.
- Also the nature and value of financial transactions.
- And the origin or headquarters of the gaming company.
