Meghalaya Recognises Khasi and Garo as Official Languages After Long Deman

The State of Meghalaya has officially recognized the Khasi and Garo as the state languages alongside with the English. This recognition marks the important steps towards to preserving the indigenous identity and improving governance accessibility in the state. This moves comes after the long-standing demands from the local communities. As to granting official status to the languages which are spoken by the state’s largest tribes the government aims to strengthen the cultural roots along with also pushing for their inclusion in to the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India.

Meghalaya Grants Official Status to Khasi and Garo

The Meghalaya State Cabinet have approved the Meghalaya Official Languages Ordinance, 2026 and brings the significant change in to the state’s language policy.
