Nameri Tiger Reserve, which is situated in Assam, has earned the world recognition in terms of the conservation of tigers and protected area management. This is because of their fulfillment of the required criteria under the CA|TS guidelines. Nameri became CA|TS Approved on 10th September 2026 through the evaluation of the CA|TS International Executive Committee. With this recognition, Nameri becomes another addition to the list of Assam’s tiger reserves that have earned CA|TS Approval.
What is CA|TS?
CA|TS stands for Conservation Assured | Tiger Standards which is a globally recognized standard that is used to determine the management effectiveness in tiger conservation areas.
CA|TS has been formally established in 2013 and has been created by tiger and protected area specialists. The standard sets the minimum criteria for management of tiger habitat and promotes assessment of the protected areas according to those criteria.
Assessment within the framework includes,
- Wildlife Protection and Enforcement
- Habitat Management
- Monitoring of tigers and other wildlife
- Administration of the Protected Area
- Management Planning
- Community Participation
- Conservation Effectiveness
CA|TS is connected with a larger initiative aimed at improving management standards in the tiger range countries.
Nameri Tiger Reserve and Its Location
The Nameri Tiger Reserve is situated in the Sonitpur district of Assam, close to the foothills of Eastern Himalaya, sharing borders with Arunachal Pradesh.
As per the data recorded by the Government of Assam, the total notified area of Nameri Tiger Reserve is 344 sq km, consisting of 200 sq km core area and 144 sq km buffer zone. Nameri National Park is spread over 200 sq km and forms the core part of the tiger reserve.
This reserve is linked with the Jia Bhoroli river that plays an essential geographical component of this landscape. Some of the animals found here include tigers, elephants, leopards, clouded leopards, gaur, deer, etc.
Nameri Tiger Reserve: Important Conservation Characteristics
CA|TS certification is based on the management of the tiger reserve in several areas of conservation other than tiger population counts.
These important elements include,
- Conservation of tigers: Management of the habitats of tigers.
- Habitat management: Maintenance of forest conditions required by wildlife.
- Wildlife protection: Management practices to avoid hazards to the wildlife.
- Monitoring: Assessment of wildlife and habitat conditions.
- Protected area management: Management practices and conservation planning.
- Community participation: Community involvement in conservation activities.
Thus, the CA|TS system serves to provide an evaluation of the tiger reserve through management practices instead of just being a ranking of tiger population.
CA|TS Status Acquired by All Four Tiger Reserves in Assam
This designation makes an important achievement for the state of Assam. Four tiger reserves that have been identified through this development are listed below:
| Tiger Reserve | Located at Notable fact |
| Kaziranga Tiger Reserve Assam | Famous for its rhino population |
| Manas Tiger Reserve Assam | A tiger reserve within the Manas protected area |
| Orang Tiger Reserve Assam | Habitat along the Brahmaputra landscape |
| Nameri Tiger Reserve Sonitpur | Habitat close to Assam-Arunachal border |
It may be noted here that the Assam government has designated Nameri, Manas and Kaziranga tiger reserves on its forest department website, whereas it maintains its biodiversity information database for the entire protected area network of Assam.
