This year, Raksha Bandhan celebrated on Friday, 28th August. Raksha Bandhan is also called ‘Rakhi’ and is one of the most loved Indian festivals celebrating the relationship between siblings. Why is Raksha Bandhan Celebrated?

In a very literal sense, the Raksha Bandhan Festival can be interpreted to mean “protection bond”. Here, Raksha means protection and bandhan means bond or tie. So Raksha Bandhan is the bond between people which implies care, trust and mutual assurance.

Although many historians may claim there is no exact historic event that led to the origin of Raksha Bandhan.

In any case, the origin of Raksha Bandhan goes back to a few historic traditions of rakshas or protective threads and amulets. These threads were tied during rituals as a sign of prayers for safety and wellbeing.

These rituals used to take place during the Shravana Purnima. With time, the custom got linked with the bond of brother-sister and became what we call Raksha Bandhan nowadays.

Raksha Bandhan 2026 Traditions

Raksha Bandhan has been observed as a simple puja ritual with a Rakhi tying ceremony.

It involves the preparation of a thali by the sister, which contains a rakhi, roli or kumkum, akshat or rice, sweets, and a diya among others.

The sister also applies a tilak on the forehead of her brother, ties a rakhi on his wrist, and performs aarati. In the process, she blesses her brother for good health, happiness and prosperity.

Traditionally, the brother presents a gift to the sister and vows to protect her. Sweets are exchanged and families have meals and fun together.

Even though traditions differ from one household and region to another, the spirit of the ritual has remained the same.

Symbolism of the Rakhi

A rakhi is not just any piece of decoration. The rakhi is the symbol of affection, faith, protection and responsibility.

Classically speaking, the tying of the rakhi means that the sister prays for her brother and the brother makes a vow to always be there for his sister. However, the symbolism of the festival has changed along with the change in social relations.

For many Indian families, the Raksha Bandhan festival symbolizes equality and reciprocity. Instead of concentrating exclusively on protection of a sister by her brother, this festival can symbolize the vow of the siblings to protect one another and support in any situation throughout their lives.

Thus, the rakhi becomes a symbol of such relationship between the family members.

Celebrations of the Raksha Bandhan Festival in India

The day of Shravana Purnima is connected to various festivities and traditions of different regions in India.

In Maharashtra, the day is celebrated as Narali Purnima. Fishermen pray to God for offering the coconuts to the sea and ask for good luck and prosperity in fishing.

The festival called Rakhi Purnima or Gamha Purnima is celebrated in Odisha. On this day people pay tribute to Lord Balabhadra and agriculture.

In Nepal, this day corresponds to the festival of Janai Purnima which has its special customs and religious practices.

All these celebrations prove that the Shravana Purnima Day is not limited to the festival of Raksha Bandhan.
