An overview of Shaktikant Das’s role as RBI Governor
Shaktikant Das, the current RBI Governor, assumed the position of the 25th Governor of RBI in December 2018. Shaktikant Das: Governor of the Year 2023
Shaktikant Das was also honored with the title of ‘Governor of the Year’ for 2023 by Central Banking in London for his contribution to safeguarding the Indian economy amidst several global economic turmoils, and he has been acknowledged for his policy measures in dealing with inflation. With this award, Das became the second Central Bank Governor to be honoured with the award after Raghuram Rajan who won the title in 2015.
Pivotal role
One of the defining aspects of Shaktikant Das’ tenure was his response to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the economy reeling from the pandemic’s effects, Shaktikant Das and the RBI took swift and comprehensive actions. These measures included implementing monetary policies, regulatory adjustments and liquidity enhancement initiatives to cushion the economic blow and ensure financial stability.

He actively promoted digital payments and explored avenues for the introduction of a central bank digital currency (CBDC).
