Why August 16 Will Be Observed as ‘Ayushman Diwas’ Instead of ‘Khela Hobe Diwas’ in West Bengal

The state of West Bengal set to witness a change as on August 16th, the state government has announced that the day will now be celebrated as the ‘Ayushman Diwas’ instead of ‘Khela Hobe Diwas’. This announcement was made by the Honorable Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, it marks the shift in the state, focus from promoting the sports to raising awareness about healthcare through the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).

This decision will also coincides with the completion of the first 100 days of newly elected BJP-led government in Bengal.

Why Has August 16 Been Renamed as ‘Ayushman Diwas’?

Honorable Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced that August 16 will be observed as the Ayushman Diwas to promote awareness about the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), it is the Centre’s flagship health insurance scheme.

According to the state government, the observance of the day aims to educate eligible families about the benefits of the scheme and encourage greater enrollment and utilization of the cashless healthcare services available under Ayushman Bharat.

This day will also commemorate the completion of 100 days of the BJP government in the West Bengal after its victory in the state Assembly elections.

What is Ayushman Diwas?

Ayushman Diwas is intended to highlight the importance of the affordable and accessible healthcare for economically vulnerable families.

There are several awareness campaigns, outreach programmes and public events are also expected to be organised across the state to inform the citizens about eligibility criteria, benefits and the process of to availing treatment under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

This initiative reflects the government’s emphasis on expanding the healthcare access and ensuring that eligible beneficiaries can take advantage of the India’s largest publicly funded health insurance program.

What Was ‘Khela Hobe Diwas’?

Khela Hobe Diwas was introduced in the year 2021 by the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) government which was led by Mamata Banerjee.

This day was dedicated to encouraging sports participation among young people across the state of West Bengal.

As part of the celebrations, sports equipment was distributed to the schools, clubs and youth organizations to promote physical fitness and sporting culture.

The phrase “Khela Hobe” had also become a widely recognized as the political slogan during the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections after evolving into a state-sponsored sports promotion initiative.

What is Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY)?

Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) is the Government of India’s flagship health assurance program which is aimed at to providing financial protection against the major medical expenses.

This scheme offers cashless health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per eligible family per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalization.

Also beneficiaries can receive the treatment at empanelled government and private hospitals all across the country without worrying about the high hospitalization costs.

Ayushman Bharat seeks to reduce out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure along with improving access to quality medical treatment for economically weaker sections of society.

Significance of the Announcement

The decision to replace Khela Hobe Diwas with Ayushman Diwas represents the major shift in the state’s public outreach priorities.

While the earlier observance focused on to promoting sports and youth participation, this new initiative emphasizes healthcare awareness and public welfare.
