India has taken a significant step towards the future of urban transportation with the blessing of its very first electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft prototype by The ePlane Company, an IIT Madras-incubated startup. This prototype showcases India’s entry into the phenomenon of air mobility, it is a fast-growing sector in the world which is expected to change the way traveling works in the near future, including reducing traffic jams and travel time with the help of electric air taxi services.
The company will focus on air ambulance services first and expand to passenger transportation next, with plans to start commercial operations by 2028.
What is eVTOL?
The Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) is an electric-powered flying vehicle that takes off and lands vertically, similar to a helicopter but travels horizontally like a regular airplane.
eVTOLs are different from conventional airplanes because they do not need long runways. eVTOLs use many electric propellers and sophisticated flight control systems. They land and take off from a small area referred to as vertiport.
The technology is seen as an important part of the Advanced Air Mobility technology that aims to improve transportation in urban areas by making it safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly.
How does eVTOL technology work?
The eVTOL uses a combination of helicopter-like vertical lifting ability and fixed-wing airplane-like flying efficiency.

- Takes off vertically by using several electric propellers.
- Changes to horizontal flying after reaching altitude.

- Relies on rechargeable batteries instead of aviation fuel.
Most of the eVTOL prototypes employ distributed electric propulsion, which means several electric motors perform both lift and thrust. This ensures safety because even if one motor is not operational, the aircraft can still fly.
