A national state of emergency was declared in Colombia as a result of a severe earthquake of 7.4 magnitude that hit the west regions of Colombia. The earthquake had its epicenter in the vicinity of San José del Palmar in the department of Chocó and has been described as one of the strongest earthquakes in Colombia for several decades. The recent event in Colombia has put focus back on its tectonic environment, where the Nazca, South American and Caribbean tectonic plates meet. The country is located in the Ring of Fire along the Pacific Ocean, making the country prone to earthquakes.
What Happened in Colombia?
An earthquake of 7.4 magnitude occurred in the west region of Colombia in August 2026, with the epicenter being in the vicinity of San José del Palmar in the department of Chocó.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 107 kilometres, which means that it belongs to intermediate-focus earthquake category. The intermediate earthquakes usually take place within a range of 70 and 300 kilometers deep.
What Makes Colombia Seismically Vulnerable?

What Is the Pacific Ring of Fire?
The Pacific Ring of Fire, sometimes referred to as the Circum-Pacific Belt, stretches for about 40,000 kilometres along the Pacific Ocean.
It runs through the borders of several tectonic plates and is characterised by high levels of seismic and volcanic activity.
It is believed that the Pacific Ring of Fire is responsible for about 90% of the earthquakes in the world and about 75% of the volcanoes that are active.
Some of the countries that can be found along this ring include Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Mexico, the US, Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines and New Zealand.
Earthquakes happen regularly due to the plate convergence, subduction and fault movement.
Why Does the Earthquake Hazard Persist?
The earthquake hazard in Colombia is not just based on tectonics alone. Population exposure and urbanisation are also factors that affect the hazard level.
Major cities like Cali, Bogotá, Medellín, Pereira and Manizales can be found within or nearby the areas that experience Andean seismicity.
