As India has started the preparations for the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026, and the government announced the Kolkata as the main city to host for this year celebrations. The announcements was made during the grand Yoga Mahotsav 2026 event which held at the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh. Along with this Ministry of Ayush also unveiled the official theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” and highlights the yoga’s growing importance to promote the physical fitness, mental wellness and preventive healthcare.
Kolkata Chosen as Main Venue for International Day of Yoga 2026
Union Minister of State for Ayush, Shri Prataprao Jadhav has announced that the main celebration of the International Day of Yoga 2026 will take place in Kolkata, West Bengal, on 21st June 2026.
The minister stated that Kolkata represents the India’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage and making it an ideal location for the global yoga event.
He also emphasised that yoga has become the worldwide movement for wellness and balanced living.
The event is also expected to attract participants from across India and several countries.
Theme for IDY 2026: ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’
The official theme for this year’s International Day of Yoga is the “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”
The theme focuses on to the,
- Promoting physical fitness among the older adults
- Improving mental health and emotional balance
- Encouraging preventive healthcare practices
- Supporting the active and healthy lifestyles through yoga
The Ministry of Ayush has highlighted that yoga can plays the major role in helping people to maintain mobility, flexibility, mental calmness and overall wellness as they age.
Thousands Participate in Yoga Mahotsav at Khajuraho
The announcement was made during Yoga Mahotsav 2026 which was organized at the famous Western Group of Temples in Khajuraho, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Thousands of yoga enthusiasts have joined the large scale demonstration of the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) , which is part of the 25-day countdown to International Day of Yoga.
The mass yoga session reflected the increasing popularity of the yoga among people of all age groups across India.
Government Launches Yoga Sangam Portal and Yoga Park Portal
During this program, the Ministry of Ayush launched and relaunched the several important digital initiatives to strengthen public participation in yoga activities.

Yoga Park Portal – To support the dedicated yoga spaces nationwide
New Yoga T-Shirt Design – And promote the wellness and yoga awareness
These initiatives aims to make yoga more accessible and encourage community level participation across the country.
Khajuraho Emerging as a Global Yoga and Wellness Destination
Union Minister Prataprao Jadhav has also said that Khajuraho has the potential to become aa a major international destination for yoga and wellness tourism.
He highlighted that the city’s,
