Veteran Diplomat Vipul Appointed India’s Next Ambassador to Saudi Arabia

The Government of India has named Vipul who is a senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer as the country’ next Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. It currently serving as the India’s Ambassador to Qatar. He brings nearly the three decades of the diplomatic experience and deep expertise in Gulf affairs. His appointment plays the key role for the foriegn policy in West Asia as the cooperation between both nations expanding the energy, trade, investment, defence, and regional security.

India Appoints Vipul as Ambassador to Saudi Arabia

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that the veteran diplomat Vipul has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. According to the MEA, he is expected to assume his new responsibilities in upcoming days.

His appointment is considered as the significant due to the Saudi Arabia’s growing geopolitical influence and its importance in India’s economic and strategic interests in the Gulf region.

Who is Vipul?

He is the 1998-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer with the extensive experience in the diplomacy, international relations and Gulf affairs. Over the course of his distinguished career, he has served in the several important diplomatic missions and handled the wide range of responsibilities involving political, economic and strategic cooperation.

Educational Background

He completed graduation in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 1994 and also holds an MBA from Indian School of Business.

His strong academic credentials complement with his vast diplomatic experience.

Extensive Diplomatic Experience Across the World

Throughout his diplomatic career, Vipul has served in the several important Indian missions abroad.

His postings have included the,

  • Cairo
  • Colombo
  • Geneva
  • Dubai

These assignments exposed him to the diverse geopolitical environments and helped him develop expertise in to the diplomacy, trade relations, security cooperation, development partnerships and multilateral negotiations.

Key Roles in the Ministry of External Affairs

Apart from his overseas assignments, Vipul has also played the important role within India’s foreign policy establishment. Between the year 2014 and 2017, he served as the Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs and contributed to the policy formulation and diplomatic initiatives.

  • Ambassador of India to Qatar (since August 2023)
