Tamil Nadu Gold Ring Scheme 2026: Date, Eligibility and Key Details

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay will inaugurate the state’s scheme of providing gold ring, called the Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam, for newborns on September 28, 2026. As per the scheme, the eligible babies delivered in government hospitals will be provided a gold ring of one gram. First round has 1.28 lakh gold rings ready for distribution. The scheme is applicable retroactively from June 22, 2026, which means all eligible babies delivered in government hospitals after this date will be benefited from it. The scheme integrates the Tamil tradition with the welfare scheme tied with the health sector.

What Is Tamil Nadu’s One-Gram Gold Ring Scheme?

The one-gram gold ring scheme, named Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam, will provide a gold ring of one gram to eligible newborns delivered in government hospitals across Tamil Nadu.

The rings will have unique serial number, packed in tamper-proof packaging. The first batch of 1.28 lakh gold rings is already available for distribution.

“Thaimaaman” means the maternal uncle who traditionally gives the newborn a gift in gold form.

When Will the Scheme Be Launched?

Respectable Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay is set to launch this scheme on September 28th 2026. This launch is expected to happen at the Usilampatti Government Hospital, in Madurai.

The program was scheduled to begin on September 15 but has been postponed.

For babies born from June 22 to September 27, the distribution will be done through specific centers. From September 28, the eligible babies will get the ring on their way out of the government hospital with their mother.

Who Is Eligible for the Gold Ring?

The scheme can be taken by,

• Babies born in government hospitals in Tamil Nadu
• Children whose mothers are permanent residents of Tamil Nadu
• The eligible beneficiaries registered under the monitoring system of pregnancy and child health of the state

The government has made the scheme retroactive from June 22, 2026, the birthday of the Chief Minister.

How Much Money is Being Allotted in the Scheme?

The State Government is making an annual provision of ₹755.83 crore for the implementation of the scheme.

The amount that is being allocated will be used to cover the needs for 4.41 lakh gold rings that weigh one gram each and are 22 carats in purity in one year. First procurement will cater to 1.28 lakh rings.

There are approximately 7.8 lakh births in the state annually, and 53% of the deliveries take place in government hospitals, according to official statistics quoted by The New Indian Express.

Why Is This Scheme Referred to as Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram?

This scheme has borrowed from the culture of Thaimaaman Seer in Tamil Nadu, where it is custom for the maternal uncle to give gifts to a new-born baby.

It can be recalled that the government order released in June referred to the ring as a gift in connection with the new-born baby, motherhood, and the Thaimaaman culture.
