DRDO and Indian Navy Successfully Test Naval Anti-Ship Missile (NASM-SR)

The Defense Research and Development Organization and the Indian Navy have successfully performed the maiden salvo launch which is the Naval Anti-Ship Missile-Short Range (NASM-SR). The test was carried out from the naval helicopter in the state of Odisha and it also marks the significant upgradation  in the India’s indigenous missile capabilities.

Maiden Salvo Launch: The First for India

The NASM-SR test stands out as the India’s first-ever salvo launch of the air-launched anti-ship missile system.

During the trial of the test total two missiles were fired in the quick succession from the same helicopter and it demonstrated the system’s rapid strike capability.

All the mission objectives were successfully achieved with the advanced tracking systems such as the radar, telemetry and the electro-optical instruments which are monitoring the test at Integrated Test Range Chandipur.

Also the key highlight of the test was the missile’s waterline hit capability and ensuring the maximum damage to the enemy ships during combat scenarios.

Advanced Technology Behind NASM-SR

The NASM-SR missile is equipped with the cutting-edge indigenous technologies and making it the powerful addition to India’s naval arsenal.

It uses the solid propulsion booster combined with the long-burn sustainer and enabling the efficient flight performance and its extended engagement capability.

The missile is integrated with the advanced systems such as the,

  • Fibre-optic gyroscope-based navigation system.
  • The high-precision seeker for target detection.
  • Also the advanced control and guidance algorithms.
  • The high-bandwidth two-way data link.
  • Radio altimeter for the accurate targeting.

These technologies have ensures the precision, reliabilit, and the adaptability in complex maritime environments.

Indigenous Development: A Collaborative Effort

The missile has been developed by the Research Centre Imarat in collaboration with several DRDO laboratories which includes the,

  • Defense Research and Development Laboratory
  • High Energy Materials Research Laboratory
  • Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory
  • Integrated Test Range

The missile is also being produced with the support of Development-cum-Production Partners (DcPP) and the several Indian industries including start-ups and  reflecting the success of the Make in India initiative in defense sector.

These missiles are important in the modern naval warfare as they will allow forces to strike the targets from long distances with high precision.
