Fairfax Financial Holdings, whose founder is Canadian billionaire Prem Watsa, is set to purchase a majority stake in IDBI Bank with the deal expected to be finalized in the first quarter of 2027. The purchase has been valued at ₹52,878 crore. Fairfax has recommended N S Kannan as chairman of IDBI Bank subject to the approval of RBI, whereas Rakesh Sharma will retain his position as MD & CEO of IDBI Bank.
Who is N S Kannan?
Former Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance N S Kannan has been suggested as IDBI Bank’s new chairman. He previously held the posts of Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer at ICICI Bank.
The appointment is part of Fairfax’s strategy of appointing financial industry veterans to steer IDBI Bank strategically. The appointment, however, is contingent on RBI approval.
Rakesh Sharma to Stay as IDBI Bank CEO
IDBI Bank’s MD & CEO Rakesh Sharma is expected to stay in his post within the context of Fairfax’s proposed leadership of IDBI Bank.
Fairfax has also selected veteran bankers to guide it during the transition period.
- Deepak Parekh – The ex-chairman of HDFC Ltd who headed the entity from 1993 to its merger with HDFC Bank in July 2023.
- Paresh Sukthankar – The ex-deputy managing director of HDFC Bank who was part of the bank’s founding team.
- C V R Rajendran – Ex-CEO of CSB Bank who would be advising Fairfax during the process.

- Foreign investment: The deal, worth $5.6 billion, is a significant foreign investment in the banking industry of India.
- Management by private players: Fairfax’s management structure and advisory board will play an important role in shaping the bank’s future.
- Integration of financial industry: The proposed consolidation of banks, insurance, and capital market businesses will expand the business of Fairfax in India, depending upon the approvals.
