India and the United Kingdom have jointly launched the India-UK Critical Minerals Global Supply Chain Observatory (GSCO) in a National Capital. This initiative reflects the growing strategic partnership between the two countries in critical minerals, as they are essential for the clean energy technologies, electric mobility, advanced manufacturing and emerging industries.
The Critical Minerals Global Supply Chain Observatory
The India-UK Critical Minerals Global Supply Chain Observatory (GSCO) was formally launched by the Respectable G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister of Coal and Mines and Yvette Cooper of the United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary.
The launch ceremony was held in the New Delhi and attended by the senior government officials, industry representatives, researchers, academic institutions and policymakers from both countries.
The initiative marks the major milestone in the India-UK cooperation which aimed at to strengthening critical mineral supply chains and ensuring long-term resource security.
Why Critical Minerals Matter in the Modern Economy
The critical minerals have become so important for the economic growth, technological innovation and energy transitions.
These minerals are essential components in the,
- Electric vehicle batteries
- Renewable energy systems
- Semiconductor manufacturing
- Defence technologies
- Advanced electronics
- Telecommunications infrastructure
As most of the countries accelerate their transition towards the clean energy and digital technologies and to securing reliable access to the critical minerals has become the strategic priority worldwide.
What is the Global Supply Chain Observatory (GSCO)?
The GSCO is a collaborative platform which is designed to monitor and analyze the global critical mineral supply chains through the data-driven research and intelligence.
The Observatory will help stakeholders identify to the,
- Supply chain disruptions
- Market risks
- Resource availability trends
- Geopolitical vulnerabilities
- Emerging opportunities in mineral markets
This platform aims to support the evidence-based decision-making by providing the timely and reliable information to governments, industries and research institutions.
Institutions Behind the Initiative
This Observatory has been developed through the partnership between the leading institutions from India and the United Kingdom.
Key Partner Institutions
- TEXMiN (Technology Innovation Hub on Mining)
- Indian Institute of Technology (ISM), Dhanbad
- University of Cambridge
Connection with the National Critical Mineral Mission
The initiative also aligns closely with the India’s National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) which seeks to strengthen the country’s access to the those minerals which are essential for future technologies and energy security.
Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy has strongly emphasized that the Observatory will support the,
- Critical mineral intelligence gathering
- Policy planning
- Supply chain diversification
- Strategic resource management
- Long-term mineral security
