Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated on July 26, every year in India in remembrance of one of the great victories in military history of the country. What is Kargil Vijay Diwas?
On July 26th every year, Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated to commemorate and honor India’s victory in Kargil War in 1999.
The war is considered to be over after the Indian Armed Forces managed to take back the important mountain heights along Line of Control (LoC) occupied by the Pakistani forces in Kargil sector, Ladakh.
This day is dedicated to the great sacrifices made by the soldiers protecting the integrity of the nation amid some of the harshest conditions on the battlefield.
The Beginning of Kargil War 1999
India faced a conflict in Kargil starting from May 1999 in the wake of the Lahore Declaration after the troops and infiltrators from Pakistan crossed precisely over the Line of Control and took up positions that were left vacated by Indian troops in the high altitudes during winter.
Their intention was to disrupt the strategically important Srinagar-Leh Highway, cutting off the Indian troops at Siachen, and creating pressure internationally on the Kashmir issue.
In the Kargil region local shepherds reported some unusual activity on May 3, 1999. Following the reconnaissance efforts revealed that large-scale infiltration had indeed taken place.
India took immediate actions and began Operation Vijay which was one of the historic military campaigns in India.
Operation Vijay: The Strategy Behind India’s Victory
The Indian government started Operation Vijay with a single goal in mind. The name ‘Operation Vijay’ itself stands for ‘Operation Victory,’ and the task was clear: eliminate every single person present on these peaks while staying within the limits of the Line of Control.
Under this mission, the Indian Army, along with support from the Indian Air Force’s Operation Safed Sagar and the Indian Navy, undertook a coordinated military strike in one of the toughest terrains on earth.
Indian soldiers fought at over an altitude of 5000 meters. Climbing almost vertical cliffs amidst the enemy shelling tested their mettle as they fought through the extreme cold and the rarefied air at such great heights.
The relentless efforts of the soldiers ultimately led to their regaining control of all the peaks that had come under enemy occupation.
Important Battles Which Turned the Course of Conflict
There were numerous significant battles in the Kargil Conflict which helped to demonstrate the guts of the Indian Army.
Battle of Tololing
The Battle of Tololing has gone down in history as one of the earliest victories of the Indian Armed Forces. After weeks of tough fighting, the Indian Army succeeded in regaining control over Tololing on June 13, 1999, thus making it easier for themselves to make further moves.
Battle of Tiger Hill
The battle of Tiger Hill became the most significant battle of the Kargil Conflict. After a daring attack, Indian soldiers took back control over this hill on July 4, 1999, thus turning the fate of the war in favor of India.

Also, Indian troops managed to regain important positions such as,

By the end of July 1999, all Indian positions captured by the Pakistani side had returned under the control of the Indian Armed Forces, achieving victory without exceeding the Line of Control.
The Kargil War Heroes
These warriors include Captain Vikram Batra (PVC), Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav (PVC), Captain Vijyant Thapar, Rifleman Sanjay Kumar (PVC) and Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey (PVC).
The bravery displayed by these soldiers is an inspiration for millions of Indians.

The country is celebrating the Kargil Vijay Diwas 2026 on July 26 as a means of paying tributes to the brave soldiers who fought in the Kargil War.
