Banking in India is changing very fast. Today, most people use mobile phones and the internet for sending money, paying bills, and checking bank accounts. Both government and private banks are helping people move towards digital banking. In this journey, Kerala created history by becoming the first state in India to achieve complete digital banking services.
On 7th January 2023, the Chief Minister of Kerala announced that the state had successfully become fully digital in the banking sector. This achievement showed how technology can make banking easier and faster for everyone.
What does Fully Digital Banking Mean?
Fully digital banking means that people can use banking services online without visiting a bank branch again and again. In Kerala, every eligible bank account was connected with at least one digital banking service.
These services included:
- Debit cards
- Mobile banking
- Net banking
- UPI payment services
Because of this, people could transfer money, pay bills, and use other banking facilities directly through their phones or computers.
How Kerala Achieved this Success?
The Kerala government and banks worked together to make digital banking available to all people. Special efforts were made to connect even rural and remote areas with banking services.
Banks encouraged customers to use online payment systems and digital apps. At the same time, the government helped people understand how to use these services safely and easily.
This teamwork played an important role in making Kerala India’s first fully digital banking state.
High Literacy Rate Helped Kerala
One of the biggest reasons behind Kerala’s success is its high literacy rate. People in the state are generally well educated and quickly accepted new technology.
Since many people already knew how to use smartphones and the internet, they found digital banking simple and useful. This made the shift from traditional banking to online banking much smoother.
Role of KFON Internet Services
The Kerala government also launched the Kerala Fibre Optic Network (KFON) project. This project helped provide high-speed internet services across the state, including villages and remote locations.
Better internet connectivity allowed more people to access online banking services without difficulty. It also strengthened the digital system of the state.
Digital Awareness Campaigns
Kerala did not focus only on technology. The state also worked on digital education. Local bodies and officials trained elderly people and villagers to use online banking services.
People were taught how to:
- Send money online
- Use UPI apps
- Make digital payments
- Stay safe from online fraud
These awareness programs helped more people feel confident about digital banking.
Other Digital Achievements of Kerala
Kerala has already made many records in the digital sector. The state was the first in India to declare internet access as a basic right for citizens.
The state has also made many government services available online. Because of this strong digital system, Kerala was able to achieve success in digital banking quickly.
Thrissur Led the Way
Before the whole state became digitally connected in banking, Thrissur district achieved 100 percent digital banking. Its success later became a model for the entire state.
After this achievement, Kerala expanded the same system across all districts and finally became the country’s first fully digital banking system.
