The IAAF itself was founded in the year 1912 in Stockholm shortly after the Olympic Games. In the 2019 the organization officially changed its name to World Athletics which is now responsible for managing and promoting athletics worldwide.
Over the years the World Athletics Day has grown into one of the world’s largest youth sports celebrations.

Several important milestones has been shaped the journey of World Athletics Day over nearly three decades.
- 1996: First World Athletics Day was celebrated during the Atlanta Olympics century year
- 1997: The student winners had attended the IAAF World Championships in Athens.
- 1998: Young participants has also visited the Athletics World Cup in Johannesburg.
- 2006: Greater focus placed on the children aged 7 to 15 years/
- 2016: Also more than 100 sports federations participated globally
- 2019: IAAF officially renamed as the World Athletics.

World Athletics Day 2026 Theme
The official theme for the World Athletics Day 2026 has not yet been announced by the World Athletics. However it is based on previous initiatives and the focus is expected to remain on youth empowerment through sports.
Also to raise the awareness about health and fitness, make inclusivity in athletics participation and encouraging the equal opportunities for boys and girls in sports.
The 2025 theme was ‘Relay Around the World Challenge’ and highlighted teamwork, unity and the spirit of passing on athletic values to future generations.
