The Gujarat Forest Department and Vantara has released total 20 blackbucks into the Banni Grasslands of the Kutch on August 15th, 2026, to celebrate the India’s 80th Independence Day. These released blackbucks comprise total 5 males and 15 females, which have been relocated from the Vantara, Jamnagar, after the permission of the Chief Wildlife Warden, Gujarat, and the Central Zoo Authority. This initiative has been technically supported by the Greens Zoological Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (GZRRC).
Why Were Blackbucks Released in Banni Grasslands?
Reintroducing blackbucks is an effort to restore native wildlife and conserve the grassland ecosystem of Banni.
As native herbivores, the presence of blackbucks will contribute towards the operation of the grassland food chain.
This restoration effort is a part of other conservation initiatives for native species and important grassland ecosystems.
20 Blackbucks Relocated from Vantara
The released population includes,
- 5 male blackbucks
- 15 female blackbucks
- Total: 20 blackbucks
These animals have been relocated from Vantara, Jamnagar, through the required regulatory clearances.
How Does the Blackbuck Release Benefit Banni?
The restoration project will help boost the population of native herbivores in Banni and restore ecology.
The presence of a healthy population of herbivores can be beneficial for the process of grasslands. In the long term, the restoration of native species would eventually result in the restoration of interactions among herbivores, predators and vegetation.
But the restoration of species requires consistent monitoring and management of habitat and not just releasing animals.

It was emphasized that the restoration of species would require a sustained effort that would involve science-based planning, habitat knowledge and collaboration of all stakeholders.
As per Vantara’s Special Director of Compliance and Due Diligence, Ajit Kulkarni, restoration of species requires knowledge about habitat, species and individuals involved along with population planning and community engagement.
