Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated on July 26, every year in India in remembrance of one of the great victories in military history of the country. In 2026, India will celebrate the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas remembering the brave soldiers who fought in the Kargil War 1999 amid the difficult conditions while fulfilling their duty.
This day is not only about remembering the soldiers who lost their lives in Operation Vijay, but also about celebrating the courage, resilience, and commitment of India. From the cold peaks of Ladakh up to the modern improvements of Indian defence forces, the spirit created after Kargil lies in every part of the country till today.
What is Kargil Vijay Diwas?
On July 26th every year, Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated to commemorate and honor India’s victory in Kargil War in 1999.
The war is considered to be over after the Indian Armed Forces managed to take back the important mountain heights along Line of Control (LoC) occupied by the Pakistani forces in Kargil sector, Ladakh.
This day is dedicated to the great sacrifices made by the soldiers protecting the integrity of the nation amid some of the harshest conditions on the battlefield.
The Beginning of Kargil War 1999
India faced a conflict in Kargil starting from May 1999 in the wake of the Lahore Declaration after the troops and infiltrators from Pakistan crossed precisely over the Line of Control and took up positions that were left vacated by Indian troops in the high altitudes during winter.
Their intention was to disrupt the strategically important Srinagar-Leh Highway, cutting off the Indian troops at Siachen, and creating pressure internationally on the Kashmir issue.
In the Kargil region local shepherds reported some unusual activity on May 3, 1999. Following the reconnaissance efforts revealed that large-scale infiltration had indeed taken place.
India took immediate actions and began Operation Vijay which was one of the historic military campaigns in India.
Operation Vijay: The Strategy Behind India’s Victory
The Indian government started Operation Vijay with a single goal in mind. The name ‘Operation Vijay’ itself stands for ‘Operation Victory,’ and the task was clear: eliminate every single person present on these peaks while staying within the limits of the Line of Control.
Under this mission, the Indian Army, along with support from the Indian Air Force’s Operation Safed Sagar and the Indian Navy, undertook a coordinated military strike in one of the toughest terrains on earth.
Indian soldiers fought at over an altitude of 5000 meters. Climbing almost vertical cliffs amidst the enemy shelling tested their mettle as they fought through the extreme cold and the rarefied air at such great heights.
The relentless efforts of the soldiers ultimately led to their regaining control of all the peaks that had come under enemy occupation.
Important Battles Which Turned the Course of Conflict
There were numerous significant battles in the Kargil Conflict which helped to demonstrate the guts of the Indian Army.
Battle of Tololing
The Battle of Tololing has gone down in history as one of the earliest victories of the Indian Armed Forces. After weeks of tough fighting, the Indian Army succeeded in regaining control over Tololing on June 13, 1999, thus making it easier for themselves to make further moves.
Battle of Tiger Hill
The battle of Tiger Hill became the most significant battle of the Kargil Conflict. After a daring attack, Indian soldiers took back control over this hill on July 4, 1999, thus turning the fate of the war in favor of India.
Other Important Victories
Also, Indian troops managed to regain important positions such as,
Point 4875
Batalik
Mushkoh Valley
Kaksar
By the end of July 1999, all Indian positions captured by the Pakistani side had returned under the control of the Indian Armed Forces, achieving victory without exceeding the Line of Control.
The Kargil War Heroes
These warriors include Captain Vikram Batra (PVC), Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav (PVC), Captain Vijyant Thapar, Rifleman Sanjay Kumar (PVC) and Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey (PVC).
The bravery displayed by these soldiers is an inspiration for millions of Indians.
The Kargil war also provided several notable gallantry awards such as 4 Param Vir Chakras and 9 Maha Vir Chakras, etc.
How to Celebrate Kargil Vijay Diwas 2026

Right to Protest Debate Revives Constitutional Rights Discussion
The Right to Protest in India is a constitutional safeguard that allows citizens to peacefully express opinions and dissent through speech and peaceful assembly under Articles 19(1)(a) and 19(1)(b). However, the right is subject to reasonable restrictions related to public order, national security, sovereignty, and the rights of others. Recent police action against the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) march toward Parliament renewed debate on protest regulations. Authorities may regulate demonstrations through permissions, designated protest areas, and prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS. Supreme Court judgments, including Himat Lal K. Shah (1973), Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan (2018), and Amit Sahni v. Commissioner of Police (2020), have upheld peaceful protests while emphasizing that demonstrations cannot cause indefinite disruption, block public spaces, or harm public convenience.

The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), which operates underneath the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), has instructed GitHub to remove those repositories in connection with Bitchat, a decentralized messaging system that makes use of Bluetooth technology. This act comes from an order that was made on July 23, 2026, and made public by Jack Dorsey, who founded Bitchat and was the CEO of Twitter until recently. This decision stems from both national security and possible criminal activity concerns, especially when it comes to law enforcement’s task of controlling those kinds of systems.
What Is Bitchat App?
Bitchat is a messaging app that is free to use and open-source. Using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networks, it enables communication through peer-to-peer messaging, thus eliminating the need for internet or mobile networks.
It is noteworthy that the app operates on BLE mesh network instead of conventional servers allowing devices nearby to transmit encoded messages.
The main features offered by Bitchat are,
Peer-to-peer transfer
BLE mesh network
Not dependent on any internet or cellular network
Encrypted messaging from user to user
There are no requirements for registration
No mobile number or email verification
No centralized server involved
Ability to communicate over a distance that varies from 30 m to 100 m depending on network conditions.
The app’s decentralized architecture is aimed at providing uninterrupted communication when there is no internet service or when the network is restricted.
What Led to India’s Request for the Removal of Bitchat from GitHub?
According to the government, the anonymous and decentralized nature of Bitchat makes it hard to monitor or track any illegal activity carried out using this tool.
In the opinion of the authorities, the app can be exploited in the following ways,
By terrorist organizations
By anti-national forces
By organized crime groups
By cybercriminals
By individuals whose aim is to spread fake news in times of emergencies
Officials also stated that Bitchat can still function in case of the suspension of the internet, thus making the task of monitoring and attribution harder.
Legal Provisions Utilized
The command given to GitHub by was built on the provisions of existing digital governance framework in India.
The directive utilized,
Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, 2000
Rule 3(1)(d) of the Information Technology Rules, 2021
These provisions mandate the online intermediaries to remove or disable the content whenever they receive instruction by the government according to relevant law.
As per the reports, GitHub was asked to disable access to three repositories of Bitchats, inclusive of Android application.
What is the Mechanism Behind Bluetooth Mesh Messaging?
In contrast to conventional messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram, Bitchat operates without requiring internet servers.
Specifically,
Devices communicate through Bluetooth.
Messages are passed using nearby devices.
Technology of mesh network makes communication beyond direct Bluetooth reach.
There is no central server storing messages exchanged.
Communication can continue without any access to Wi-Fi or mobile data.
It is true that this design is resistant to interruptions in communication, but at the same time, it raises issues regarding regulations.
