Mizoram Assembly Passed Resolution To Inclusion of Mizo Language in 8th Schedule

The Mizoram State Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution requesting the inclusion of the Mizo language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India. This resolution was introduced by State Education Minister Vanlalthlana. And they received support from all members of the assembly. This step represents an important move toward official recognition of the Mizo language at the national level.

During the assembly discussion Honorable Chief Minister Lalduhoma expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Mizo Language Development Board (MLDB) and in which initiated the proposal.

The board has conducted the consultations with various stakeholders before the resolution was introduced in the assembly.

The unanimous adoption of the resolution shows a strong consensus among political leaders and organizations in Mizoram.

It reflects the state’s commitment to preserving and promoting the Mizo language and cultural identity.

Concerns Over Schedule Tribe Status Addressed

Some members of the Assembly has raised concerns that the inclusion of the Mizo language in the Eighth Schedule might affect the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status of the Mizo community.

Addressing this concerns the Chief Minister clarified that such fears are unfounded.

He also explained that the Mizo people are recognized as a Scheduled Tribe under the Scheduled Tribe Order of 1950.

And this will be the legal status remains unchanged.

Therefore the recognition of the Mizo language would not impact the tribal status of the community.

Proposal for Sixth Schedule Status for Entire Mizoram

While discussing the language issue the Chief Minister also suggested exploring the possibility of declaring the entire state of Mizoram as a Scheduled Area under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

He also highlighted that a similar arrangement exists in Meghalaya where the entire state enjoys Sixth Schedule provisions.

Such a move could strengthen local governance and protect the social, cultural and administrative interests of tribal communities.

Significance of Including Mizo Language in the 8th Schedule

The Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India currently recognizes 22 official languages of our country.

Languages included in the schedule receive government support for their development and promotion.

If the Mizo language is added to the Eighth Schedule it could benefit from increased academic research, translation work and official usage in government examinations and administrative communication.
