General NS Raja Subramani Assumes Charge as India's New Chief of Defence Staff

General NS Raja Subramani officially took charge as the India’s next Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) on 31st May, 2026. He succeeds the General Anil Chauhan and becomes the senior-most military officer in the nation. He is known for his extensive operational experience and strategic expertise on the regional security matters involving Pakistan and China

General NS Raja Subramani Assumes Charge as CDS

General NS Raja Subramani formally assumed the office as the India’s Chief of Defense Staff on May 31, 2026. The CDS serves as the principal military adviser to the Government of India and it plays the key role in ensuring coordination among the Army, Navy and Air Force.

As CDS is the Country’s highest-ranking military officer, General Subramani will be responsible for the guiding strategic military reforms and enhancing operational synergy among the three services.

His appointment marks the important milestone in India’s ongoing efforts to modernize its defense structure.

Succeeds General Anil Chauhan

General Subramani has taken over from the General Anil Chauhan, who completed his tenure as the Chief of Defense Staff on May 30, 2026.

During his tenure, General Chauhan had put focused on to strengthening military modernization, promoted the indigenous defense capabilities and advancing integrated military planning. The transition also ensures the continuity in several major defense initiatives that are currently underway.

Experience at National Security Council Secretariat

Prior to assuming charge as the CDS, General Subramani served as the Military Advisor at the National Security Council Secretariat. In this role, he worked closely on the strategic security issues affecting India.

The assignment gave him the significant exposure to national security policymaking and coordination among various government agencies.

His experience at the NSCS is also expected to strengthen his ability to handle the broader responsibilities associated with the CDS position.
