The Lok Sabha has passed the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, paving the way for the establishment of a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, Assam. The move represents a major stride in expanding premier management education to the North-Eastern region of India, fulfilling a long-standing regional demand.
What the Bill Proposes
The Bill amends the Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017, to officially incorporate IIM Guwahati into the list of national management institutes. The institution will receive a central financial grant of ₹550 crore to support its development, infrastructure, and operational setup.
Significance of IIM Guwahati
- Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, while introducing the Bill, emphasized the strategic and symbolic importance of Guwahati:
- Guwahati serves as a major educational and economic hub for the Northeast.
- Establishing an IIM in the region will provide equitable access to quality management education.
- The institute will serve as a catalyst for regional development, attracting talent and investment.
This initiative not only meets educational aspirations but also contributes to the larger vision of inclusive national growth, ensuring the Northeast’s integration in India’s premier academic framework.
IIMs: A Growing Brand
Tthere are currently 21 operational IIMs in the country. Over the years, they have emerged as a global brand for excellence in management education, with increasing interest from abroad.
Notably, the government is also gearing up to launch an IIM campus in Dubai next month, showcasing India’s growing influence in global higher education and the internationalization of its academic institutions.
Parliamentary Context
Although the Bill was passed successfully, it occurred without debate in the Lok Sabha amid opposition uproar over the SIR issue. Despite the disruptions, the legislation received approval, reflecting bipartisan support for educational expansion, even amidst political turbulence.
Strategic and Educational Impact
