What Is Mission Sehat? The Initiative Everyone Is Talking About

India has taken major step towards the healthier future with the launch of Sehat Mission in the National Capital on 11th May, 2026. This initiative introdcued under the leadership of the Honorable Prime Minister of Narendra Modi. Mission Sehat aims to connect the agriculture, nutrition and healthcare in the unified approach. This mission was announced in the presence of key ministers and scientists.

What is The Sehat Mission?

The Sehat Mission (Science Excellence for Health through Agricultural Transformation) is the joint effort by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research IICAR) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

It aims to create the direct link between what is grown in the farms and its health outcomes of people.

This mission also represents the policy shift where the government focuses not just on treating diseases but also on,

Respectable Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda highlighted that this approach moves to India from the reactive system to a proactive healthcare model.

He also emphasized that India must now focus not just on quantity of the food production, but also on quality and nutrition value of crops, disease-preventing food systems and the blanced and seasonal diets.

Traditional concepts like ‘Hitbhuk, Mitbhuk, Ritubhok’ which means that healthy, moderate, and seasonal eating have been highlighted important even today.

The mission focuses on the several important areas like,

1. Bio-fortified Crops Promotion

In which it encourages those crops which are rich in iron, zinc and essential nutrients to combat malnutrition.

2. Focus on Nutritious Grains

Promotion of the traditional grains like millets (jowar, ragi, kodo, kutki) for the better health outcomes.

3. Integrated Farming Systems

It combined agriculture with fruits and vegetables, animal husbandry and fisheries and beekeeping.

This helps to improve both farmers income and family nutrition.

4. Farmer Health and Safety

Reducing risks from the,

  • Excessive pesticide use
  • Chemical exposure
  • Unsafe farming practices

5. Food as Medicine Approach
