India’s first Made In India C295 transport aircraft is set to be delivered to the Indian Air Force (IAF) in the September 2026 and it will mark the historic moment in the country’s defence manufacturing journey. This aircraft assembled by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) in partnership with Airbus and it is the first military aircraft to be produced by the India’s private sector.
What Is the C295 Aircraft?
The C295 is the medium tactical transport aircraft which is developed by the Airbus Defence and Space.
It is designed for the wide range of the military operations, including troop transport, cargo movement, medical evacuation, disaster relief and special missions.
It is known for the its reliability and versatility and this aircraft can operate from the short and unprepared runways and making it ideal for the missions in remote and difficult terrains.
The C295 is currently used by the several air forces worldwide and it has earned the reputation for the efficient tactical airlift operations.
India’s First Private-Sector Military Aircraft
The upcoming delivery is important because it represents the first military aircraft that is assembled in India by any private company.
Under a ₹21,935-crore contract which was signed in September 2021 between the Ministry of Defence and Airbus, 56 C295 aircraft are being procured for the Indian Air Force.
The production model follows the phased approach,
- 16 aircraft delivered directly from Airbus in flyaway condition.
- 40 aircraft to be manufactured and assembled in India.
- Production undertaken through the Airbus-Tata partnership.
- Final assembly conducted at the Tata Aircraft Complex in Vadodara, Gujarat.
Delivery Timeline and Current Status
According to the officials, the first Indian-assembled C295 aircraft is currently undergoing the flight testing and it is expected to be delivered to the Indian Air Force on September 22-23, 2026.
The aircraft is likely to be inducted into one of the IAF’s C295 squadrons based in the Agra or Vadodara.
Last week, Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani has also reviewed the programme during a visit to the Tata Aircraft Complex and assessed the progress of the manufacturing activities.

Replacing the Ageing Avro Fleet
One of the primary objectives of this C295 programme is to replacing the ageing Avro HS-748 transport aircraft fleet.
The Avro aircraft entered into the service in the early 1960s and it has have served the Indian Air Force for decades.
However, the growing operational requirements and technological advancements have forced for the modern replacement.
