Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik Inaugurates Puri Jagannath Temple’s Heritage Corridor

The SMPP (Shree Mandir Parikrama Prakalpa) introduces a 75-meter-wide space around the temple, referred to as the heritage corridor. This expansive area has been meticulously divided into nine distinct zones, each serving a specific purpose aimed at enhancing the overall experience for visitors and preserving the cultural heritage surrounding the Shree Jagannath Temple.

1. Green Buffer Zone

The first zone comprises a 7-meter green buffer adjacent to the Meghanada Pacheri, the temple’s boundary. This zone acts as a protective barrier, preserving the sanctity of the temple premises.

2. Antar Pradakshina

Following the green buffer, the 10-meter Antar Pradakshina is designed to accommodate ceremonial processions of the deities throughout the year. Additionally, it serves as a parikrama path, inviting the general public to undertake a circumambulation of the sacred Shree Mandira complex.

3. Landscape Zone

The 14-meter landscape zone features a meticulously curated garden showcasing a variety of trees integral to Jagannatha culture. This area provides visitors with a serene environment, fostering a deeper connection with the temple’s cultural significance.

4. Bahya Pradakshina

An 8-meter zone known as Bahya Pradakshina allows visitors to spend moments in quiet reflection and contemplation. This area offers a peaceful retreat, complementing the spiritual atmosphere of the temple.

5. Public Convenience Zone

The 10-meter public convenience zone is equipped with nine restrooms, drinking water facilities, information-cum-donation kiosks, and mini cloakrooms. Additionally, it includes a police kiosk to ensure the safety and well-being of visitors. A shaded footpath and a dedicated emergency lane further enhance the visitor experience.

Outreach Programme

In anticipation of the inauguration on January 17, the State government organized an extensive outreach programme. Arpan Raths were taken out in every village, promoting, preserving, and protecting Jagannath culture through active participation. Big screens at gram panchayats and block headquarters broadcasted the event live, while facilitated buses brought people from remote areas to Puri, enabling them to witness the historic inauguration.

Chief Minister’s Appeal

Before unveiling the project, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik passionately appealed to the people to join the celebration by watching the proceedings live at their respective locations. Quoting Puri King Dibyasingh Dev, he emphasized the historic significance of the monumental SMPP, marking a moment unprecedented in the past 700 years around the Shree Jagannath Temple.
