Telangana Govt to Implement Insurance Scheme for Toddy Tappers:

The Telangana government has announced a new insurance scheme for toddy tappers called ‘Geetha Karmikula Bhima.’ The scheme is similar to the ‘Rythu Bhima’ program for farmers and is aimed at providing financial assistance to the families of toddy tappers who die due to accidents while collecting toddy from palm trees in the fields.

Insurance Amount and Disbursement Process:

Under the new scheme, an insurance amount of Rs. five lakh will be deposited directly into the bank account of the family members of the deceased toddy tapper. The insurance amount will be disbursed within a week of the accident, which is much faster than the current ex-gratia process. The Chief Minister of Telangana, K Chandrasekhar Rao, has instructed the Finance Minister and Excise and Prohibition Minister to prepare guidelines for the new insurance scheme.

Toddy tapping is a hazardous occupation, and there have been several unfortunate incidents of toddy tappers losing their lives due to accidental falls from trees. The government has a responsibility to support the families of the deceased and ensure their financial well-being. Although the government has been providing ex-gratia to the victims’ families, the process has been slow, and the new insurance scheme aims to speed up the disbursement of financial assistance.

The new insurance scheme will provide several benefits to the families of toddy tappers. Firstly, the insurance amount will be disbursed within a week of the accident, providing immediate financial assistance to the family. This will help them with funeral expenses and other immediate financial needs.
