Justice Neranahalli Srinivasan Sanjay Gowda has officially taken charge as a judge of the Gujarat High Court. Earlier serving in the Karnataka High Court, his transfer is part of the Supreme Court’s plan to bring diversity and better administration across Indian High Courts.
Swearing-In Ceremony
Justice Gowda was sworn in on Monday, June 9, 2025. The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, Justice Sunita Agrawal. The event took place in the First Court of the Gujarat High Court in Vadodara. It was attended by Advocate General Kamal Trivedi, senior lawyers and other important guests.
Justice Gowda’s Journey in Law
Justice Gowda is 58 years old. He began practicing law in the year 1989. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court in November 2019. Later, in September 2021, he was made a permanent judge in the same court. Over the years, he has handled many important legal matters.
Reason for His Transfer
In April 2025, the Supreme Court Collegium – a group of top judges led by the Chief Justice of India – recommended the transfer of seven High Court judges. Four of them were from Karnataka, including Justice Gowda. The goal behind these transfers was to ensure:
- Inclusivity: Judges from different regions and backgrounds serve in different states.
- Better Quality of Justice: Transfers help share experience and talent among High Courts.
Statement from the Supreme Court Collegium
The Collegium, under the leadership of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Kumar, said these transfers were important. They explained that such moves help in strengthening the justice system and make courts more inclusive and balanced.
